Location: Yaounde, Cameroon
Yaounde Central Hospital is the largest hospital in Cameroon and includes a 24hrs emergency care department. Each year the hospital conducts over 300 surgeries and assists with thousands of births. The Yaounde Central Hospital Blood Service (YCHBS) collects over half of the national collection of blood donations annually. The Blood Service provides blood for transfusion at the Yaounde Central Hospital as well as several other health facilities in and around Yaounde.
In August 2016 Jembi initiated the process of implementing BSIS at the YCHBS during a pre-implementation visit by the Jembi BSSP team to Yaounde, Cameroon. The team spent a week at the YCHBS, where they presented the Blood Safety Information System (BSIS) as a tool for data management within Blood Services as well as the BSSP as a mechanism for potentially implementing BSIS at YCHBS. Following this presentation of BSIS and the BSSP, YCHBS took the decision to move forward with implementing BSIS at their service and the team jointly agreed on pre-implementation requirements and activities, areas of responsibility in preparation for and during implementation as well as a timeline for implementation of BSIS at YCHBS beginning in January 2017.
