Senior Solution Engineer

Overview

Jembi is seeking highly experienced and qualified Senior Solution Engineers to support and lead the development and implementation of health information systems within our local and international digital health projects, primarily within the public health technology sector. This position will require the successful candidate to interact with a dynamic business and technical team, contributing to the delivery of high-quality health information solutions in South Africa and other African and Asian countries, while engaging with a diverse range of stakeholders and international communities of practice.

The role of the Senior Solution Engineer involves both leadership and technical expertise. They will work with a team of developers on one or multiple Jembi projects. The ideal candidate should have at least 5 years of experience in enterprise software development and support, using technologies such as NodeJS, Java, Kafka, SQL, Docker, etc. The Solution Engineer will take the lead in developing, customizing, and deploying robust health information systems. They will also oversee the successful completion of small to medium technical projects.

Required skills & experience

● Demonstrable leadership and independent project management capabilities.

● Minimum of 5 years' hands-on experience with Java or JavaScript in enterprise environments

● Proficient in Node.js, Java, database design, and SQL querying

● Experience with messaging systems like Kafka and batch processing techniques

● Competent in ETL processes and big data handling

● Skilled in performance tuning, including load and stress testing

● DevOps practices proficiency, including Docker, AWS, Google Cloud

● Strong Linux system administration background with bash scripting expertise

● Solid track record of supporting production systems

● Capacity for rapid learning and mastery of new technologies

● Technical writing skills for clear and effective documentation and reporting

● Effective risk management and quality assurance in software development

● Have a comprehensive understanding that extends beyond just programming, and have a talent for quickly gaining a deep knowledge of the business domain they support

● Have the ability to assertively push back on a requirement, as they possess a deep understanding of the potential problems it may bring, and can effectively communicate these concerns to both technical and non-technical stakeholders

Beneficial skills & experience

● Experience or familiarity with the e-health sector and electronic health record systems is a major advantage

● Capability to handle client-facing responsibilities with utmost professionalism. Gives management and the client the confidence that they can handle complex technical situations that they come across

● Agile methodology application and a strong understanding of project scope negotiation

Ability to decompose complex tasks into smaller units and apply basic architectural development patterns

The Senior Solution Engineer will contribute to the broader team by:

● Helping to motivate the other members of the team

● Contributing to the overall team identity and culture

● Being aware of what teammates are doing, struggling with, and how to help them

● Temporarily taking on additional responsibility to assist their Lead, Line Manager or fellow team members when required

● Proactively finding ways to get involved and bring additional value

● Occasionally, a Senior is expected to take ownership of the delivery on a small stream or project, including:

o Managing the expectations of fellow team members and the customer

o Negotiating and influencing the decisions made around the requirements and scope

o Taking all administrative responsibilities from the Lead regarding that deliverable

o Lead meetings and project delivery ceremonies

o Establishing a well-defined and well understood delivery approach
