Interoperability Streamlines Birth Registration in Mozambique with OpenHIM

The Jembi team and partners outside Chicuque Rural Hospital in Maxixe District, Inhambane Province

Jembi, in collaboration with Saudigitus, has been actively supporting the integration of the Ministry of Justice, Constitutional and Religious Affairs’s Civil Registration and Vital Statistics electronic system (e-SiRCEV) with the birth module of the Ministry of Health's Hospital Data Management System, which is based on the DHIS2 platform. This integration aims to strengthen birth registration processes in Mozambique.

Objectives of the Integration:

• Data Completion and Accessibility: Ensure comprehensive and accurate data for the National Statistics Institute.

• Vital Statistics Generation: Assist in generating vital statistics in compliance with the Mozambique Government Interoperability Framework.

Successful Interoperability Pilot at Chicuque Rural Hospital

On April 2nd and 3rd, 2024, Chicuque Rural Hospital in Maxixe District, Inhambane Province, hosted a pilot implementation of interoperability between the systems. During the pilot:

• Health workers inserted birth registration data from newborns into the Hospital Data Management System.

• The data immediately reflected in the Civil Registry System via Jembi's interoperability layer powered by OpenHIM.

Key Achievements:

• Simplified Birth Registration: Streamlined the birth registration process by enabling immediate electronic transfer of vital data.

• Train the Trainer: Jembi Mozambique's Senior Implementer, Martins Miranda, led training sessions aimed at enhancing local capacity and understanding of the interoperability between e-SiRCEV and MGDH-Birth.

This successful pilot demonstrates the potential of system interoperability to significantly improve birth registration processes in Mozambique. By simplifying these processes, this integration enhances the accuracy and accessibility of these vital statistics.
