On July 22, 2024, Mozambique took a significant step towards digital transformation by launching interoperability between two key systems: the Electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics System (e-SiRCEV) and the Hospital Data Management Module for Births Registration (MGDH-births). This initiative, held at the Afrin Hotel in Maputo, marks an important step in improving birth registration across the country.
Government Collaboration and Technical Support
Mozambique’s government, with technical support from Jembi Health Systems and Saudigitus, and funding from Vital Strategies via Bloomberg Philanthropies, has enabled real-time electronic birth notifications in public hospitals using MGDH-births. By integrating these systems, Mozambique ensures that every newborn is legally recognized, granting them access to essential services from birth.
Implementation and Expansion in Inhambane Province
In April and May 2024, the interoperability project was launched in Inhambane Province, starting with hospitals and health centers in Chicuque, Zavala, Maxixe, Inhambane, and Inharrime districts. With this project, the number of health facilities using the e-SiRCEV birth module in Inhambane will grow from five to nineteen, ensuring more children are registered at birth.
Future Plans for Nationwide Expansion
Mozambique plans to expand this system nationwide, further enhancing its digital health infrastructure. This initiative is part of the country’s commitment to leveraging digital solutions for national development, as outlined in the Government 5-year Program (PQG) 2020-2024 and its e-government strategy.
